How to Repurpose Content: 3 Tips to Get You Started
Before we jump into how to repurpose content for social media, there are three things you need to do:
1. Start with the end in mind.
Your content repurposing workflow starts at the level of creation. Be intentional about the content you’re creating and make sure you have at least one piece of long form content. That could be a Youtube video, blog post or podcast episode. These larger pieces of content will be much easier to break into small pieces later on.
If you’re a newer business owner and don’t have a blog, Youtube or podcast yet, I recommend you go deep instead of wide – meaning don’t try to do all the things!Stick with one or two platforms and concentrate your efforts there.
Tip: If you’re just on one social media network, repurpose across that platform. For example, repurpose Instagram captions to Reels, stories and lives. Take one idea and multiply it.
Once you’re at a point where you can add another platform, I recommend adding a blog, podcast or Youtube channel to form the core of your content repurposing workflow. Read this post for more on creating a content strategy that works for your business.
2. Store and organize your content.
When it comes time to repurpose content, you want to be able to locate it quickly and easily. I recommend storing all of your content in ClickUp, Google Drive or Airtable. To see how I organize all of my content, check out the video below on how to use ClickUp.
Do this by sharing the same content across social platforms. Rather than creating something from scratch or going through the work of repurposing it, just reuse the content.
With a few minor tweaks, that Instagram caption can be posted to Facebook. Or add in a market research question and post it to your stories! There are so many opportunities to reuse content across platforms, and most entrepreneurs never take advantage of them.
10 Ways to Repurpose Content for Social Media
1. Repurpose video into a blog post.
Take a Youtube video or Facebook live and run it through a tool like Rev.com. This will give you a transcript which can become the base of your blog post.
2. Repurpose video into social media captions.
Using the same process as above, pick out smaller snippets from your video and turn them into captions for Instagram, Facebook, twitter, etc.. From one 5-10 minute video, you might be able to pull out 1-5 different captions. You don’t even need a transcription tool for this! Just rewatch the video and pick out the best lines. You can take direct quotes and lines or even just use the video as inspiration for a branched off idea.
3. Repurpose video into IG stories.
Every time I post a new Youtube video, it goes on my stories and highlights! You can create a fun graphic in Canvalike the one below or upload the video itself to give your audience a 15-30 second preview. You might also create a mini-training, inviting people to check out the full video for more.
Reels and TikTok are HUGE lately and a great way to boost your visibility. Take a section of your original video and make a little teaser with captions, pop-ups, etc. Or you just take the idea from the video and refilm it for Reels.
5. Repurpose video into email.
Write an email using the video transcript and link to the full version, or take the main idea and write something new. Either way you have a new piece of content!
Strip the audio from any of your existing videos to create a brand new podcast episode. To do the same in reverse, record podcast audio while you film your next video! If you don’t have video content, use a blog post as the transcript for your next podcast episode, or transcribe podcast audio into a blog post.
7. Repurpose video into IGTV.
Starting with video content makes it super easy to upload to IGTV. Download your video from Youtube or Facebook live, and add some fun borders, a title and captions. Upload to IGTV and you’re good to go!
Pinterest is one of my favorite marketing tools, because it’s fantastic for lead generation. The key to remember is that Pinterest is a search engine, not a social media platform, so you want to make sure everything you post is SEO optimized.
Take a video snippet and turn it into Pin using Canva, or go the extra mile and turn your video into a blog post, and then create pins for the blog.

9. Repurpose video into graphics.
Extract your favorite quotes from the video and create shareable graphics in Canva. Inspirational quotes do especially well on Instagram, Pinterest and Facebook.
10. Repurpose video into a Facebook post.
Post the video to your Facebook business page and various Facebook groups. Take a small snippet, write a 1-2 sentence summary and share the link to the full video.
Bonus Tip: Don’t be afraid to reuse old content! Save Instagram captions and Facebook posts from past launches to reuse for future ones. If it was valuable then, it’s valuable now.
